Building WhatsApp AI Agents: GoHighLevel vs Wabery (2026)
GoHighLevel is the all-in-one agency CRM with a WhatsApp add-on and Conversation AI. Wabery is WhatsApp agent infrastructure. Here's what each one can actually build, and why plenty of agencies run both.
Short version: GoHighLevel alternative for WhatsApp AI agents. This page goes deeper on where the two products fit together.
If you run an agency, you probably already have GoHighLevel. It’s the CRM, the funnels, the calendars, the pipelines, the email and SMS, and for a lot of agencies it’s also the product they resell under their own brand.
So the real question is not “GoHighLevel or Wabery.” It’s narrower: when a client wants a WhatsApp AI agent that actually does the job, is GHL’s WhatsApp channel enough, or do you need something built for it?
Here’s an honest read on where the line sits.
Full disclosure: Wabery is us. We are not a CRM and we are not trying to replace GoHighLevel. Most agencies reading this should keep it.

What GoHighLevel Does That We Do Not
Let’s be clear about the size of this list, because it’s most of an agency’s operating system.
It Is the Whole Business in One Login
CRM, pipelines, funnels and websites, calendars and booking, email campaigns, SMS, call tracking, reputation management, reporting. WhatsApp is one channel inside all of that, appearing in the same Conversations inbox as everything else and usable in the same Workflows.
Wabery has none of this. If you replaced GHL with Wabery you would lose your entire back office and gain a messaging API. Don’t do that.
You Can Resell It
Agency Pro at $497 a month unlocks SaaS mode: automated sub-account creation, your branding, and rebilling clients at your own markup. That is a business model, not a feature. Wabery does not white-label and does not let you rebill our platform fee as your own product.
If “sell software subscriptions to clients” is your growth plan, GHL is built for exactly that and we are not an alternative to it.
One Contact Record Across Every Channel
A lead who came from a Facebook ad, got an email, replied to an SMS, and then messaged on WhatsApp is one contact with one timeline. That unification is genuinely valuable and it’s hard to reproduce by wiring separate tools together.
Flat Pricing Above a Certain Size
Unlimited at $297 stays $297 whether you run 4 clients or 400. Past a few dozen clients, GHL’s platform fee stops scaling while ours keeps climbing $3 to $5 per project. The WhatsApp add-on is still roughly $10 per enabled sub-account, but the base doesn’t move.
Where a WhatsApp Agent Hits GoHighLevel’s Ceiling
All of the above is about GHL as a platform. This section is narrower: what happens when the client’s WhatsApp agent needs to do something real.
Conversation AI Is Configured, Not Built
GHL’s Conversation AI answers questions and books appointments inside the thread. For a lot of clients that’s genuinely enough, and if it is, use it and skip the rest of this post.
The ceiling shows up when the agent needs to know something that lives outside GHL. Real-time availability from the client’s own booking system. An order status from their ERP. A price quote that depends on three variables. A stock check. Conversation AI works from what you configure and what GHL holds; there is no way to run your own code mid-conversation and use the result.
Wabery has hosted functions for exactly this. A Run Function action calls your TypeScript inline from an automation, and the result either sets conversation variables, replies directly, or fires as a side effect:
Keyword status → Run Function lookupOrder → Send Reply Your order is {{order_status}}, arriving {{order_eta}}.
The function runs with a timeout, and if it fails the automation continues, so a broken deploy never wedges a conversation. That is the difference between an agent that answers and an agent that does the job.
You Cannot Build Before the Client’s Number Is Approved
GHL’s WhatsApp add-on needs a dedicated phone number on the WhatsApp Business API, not one registered to the consumer app. Which means the client’s Meta paperwork gates your build, and your first two weeks are silence.
Every Wabery project includes a shared sandbox WhatsApp number. Send a join code from your phone and you have a live conversation immediately, with no Meta Business account. Build the agent, demo it, then connect the client’s real number when Meta clears it. Sandbox delivery is free through September 30, 2026; from October 1 it uses wallet credit at Meta’s published service rate, and the $2 starter credit is card-gated. The full build order is here.
For an agency this is a sales tool as much as a technical one. “Here’s a number, text it” beats “we’re waiting on verification.”
There Is No Publish Gate
Wabery separates a hosted agent’s Draft and Live versions. You edit Draft, test on the sandbox, then Review and publish, and external tools cannot publish Live for you. When an AI coding agent has write access to a client’s chatbot, that approval step matters.
Bring Your Own Model, or Your Own Agent Entirely
Conversation AI is GHL’s agent. With Wabery you can build natively, or connect an agent you already have from Claude, ChatGPT, n8n, Make, or your own API. Wabery handles the WhatsApp connection, delivery, conversation state, and Meta’s rules; what the agent says is yours.
You can also point Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or Codex at the hosted MCP server at https://mcp.wabery.com over OAuth and build by describing changes, then test them on the sandbox before anything reaches a client.
Templates and Handoff
Two smaller but real things. GHL snapshots do not carry template approvals between sub-accounts, so every new client resubmits templates. And Wabery’s handoff is a hard lock: it pauses native automations, external webhooks, and outbound API sends for that conversation, with POST /v1/messages returning 409 ai_handoff_active. Nothing talks over your teammate mid-thread.
The Cost Picture, Honestly
At 10 clients with WhatsApp enabled:
- GoHighLevel: $297 (Unlimited) + roughly $100 in WhatsApp add-ons = about $397 a month, and that buys an entire CRM, funnels, email, SMS, and calendars.
- Wabery: $55 a month, and that buys WhatsApp agent infrastructure and nothing else.
Comparing those two numbers directly is meaningless. They are not the same purchase. What is fair to say: adding Wabery alongside GHL costs about $55 at ten clients, which is roughly the price of the WhatsApp add-ons you’d be paying anyway, and it changes what the agent can do.
For dedicated WABAs, Meta bills messaging fees directly at its published rates. Wabery does not mark them up. Its shared sandbox is the exception: from October 1, Wabery pays Meta and deducts the same published service rate from the testing organization’s wallet.
How to Choose
Stay on GoHighLevel alone if: the client’s WhatsApp needs are answering FAQs, booking into the GHL calendar, and follow-up sequences. Conversation AI handles that, the contact record stays unified, and adding a second tool would be complexity for its own sake.
Add Wabery if: the agent needs live data from systems GHL doesn’t hold, you want to build and demo before the client’s Meta approval lands, you need in-chat Flows for structured intake, you want to bring your own model, or you want a publish gate between your AI tooling and a client’s live number.
The common setup: GHL as the CRM and the client-facing system of record, Wabery as the WhatsApp agent layer, with the agent writing qualified leads back into GHL through a webhook. Each does what it’s actually built for.
The Short Version
GoHighLevel is an agency operating system with a WhatsApp channel attached. Wabery is a WhatsApp agent runtime with no ambitions to be an operating system.
If Conversation AI already does what your clients need, you don’t need us. If you keep hitting the wall where the agent has to look something up, run a rule, or exist before Meta finishes approving anything, that wall is the reason we exist.
